Are Acne Treatments Complete Failure?
Most Acne sufferers are disappointed with treatments taken from reputed Dermatologists,
over a prolonged period of time and having spent lots of money. It just doesn’t go away and finally leaves the desperate victim with the feeling that Acne is Incurable! After several years of inflicting suffering on its victim, Acne finally almost dies down on its own, but often leaving a person with emotional, physical and psychological scars. Several members of my family and myself, many among us being Doctors in various specialities including one in Dermatology have suffered with Acne and now have permanent tell tale scars on our faces.
Recently I made a thorough study of this difficult problem of Acne affecting millions of youngsters all over the world. It is no surprise to find innumerable preparations and methods of treatment available in the market, indicating there is no suitable answer to this problem. Acne treatment is a multi million dollar business and is flourishing, each day bringing in a new formulation for Acne Cure. Finally I have come to the conclusion that all external Acne Cure methods are only palliative. One needs to address the problem from within our own systems and follow a Holistic Approach to control Acne in order to get rid of it once for all. How does Acne occur?
Ance occurs in sebaceous/oil producing glands attached to skin and hair follicles. The function of these glands is to produce oil, called as sebum, which normally comes out its pore on to the skin surface, alongwith some dead cells and spreads around and eventually washed off during normal bath and cleaning activities. In acne excess sebum and dead cells form and clog up the exit pore and form a whitehead and later with some pigment also added, become a blackhead. Acne bacteria thrive in this stagnant medium to cause infection and eventually pus – a full blown Acne with infection.
The activity of these sebaceous glands have some relation with the individual’s hormone profile and that is why Acne flourishes in younger age group from about 10 to 30 years**, when body’s hormone activities and its changing patterns are at its maximum.
Also there is some genetic connection too, as we often see several members in some families having acne. But Acne occurs in both sexes in all races and ethnic groups and in all ages, even in old age.

How Acne is currently treated?
Dermatologists or family physicians prescribe for local applications Vitamin A lotion (Retin A lotion) or Benzyl peroxide in a suitable strength frequently and over a extended period of time. Vitamin A orally as “Accutane” is another useful drug. Short courses of appropriate antibiotics are sometimes prescribed. All these vitamin A preparations, both local applications and oral tablets are teratogenic (likely to produce birth defects in the babies) and pregnancy should be avoided a month or two before starting these and after stopping too.
Other general measures to control Acne are avoiding or minimizing stress, taking a healthy balanced diet with lots of fresh vegetables and fruits, getting enough sleep daily, avoiding use of make up to the extent possible or washing it off as soon as possible, washing face and other affected areas thrice daily with any bland and mild soap and avoiding excessive exposure to direct sun.
